Using of Have or Has in English

Have or Has? In English grammar, we are familiar with these words, right?

Yep, in English these words we know as Verb 1 and the meaning is Mempunyai in Indonesia.

But do you know guys, Have or has also have other functions besides as a verb. Do you want to know?

#1. As Verb

As I already stated before, Have or has become verb in present tense and the meaning is "mempunyai". We use Have if the subject is I/ you / we / they.

And we use Has if the subject is He / she / it

.

Those if we use them in positive sentences.

  • Diana has a fluffy cat in her house
  • Sam and erick have good friends in their school
In the negative and interrogative, Has become Have because of Does for subject He/ she / it

#2. As Auxiliary verb in perfect tense

Have or has become an auxiliary verb in perfect tense before Verb 3 ( participle). In indonesia have/has as aux.verb in perfect tense meaning is "Telah". In negative and interrogative, have or has doesn't change their form or the verb (participle). Similar with have or has in present tense, have is for I/you/they/we while has for he/she/it

  • Meta has waited for her mother since morning
  • They have played chess for two hourse
  • kiki has not eaten the meal since this afternoon
  • Have you asked him to join our club?

#3. As Modals auxiliary verb

As modals, Have or has is joined with TO becomes Have to or Has to and the meaning is "Harus" (*obligation similar with Must).Similar with have or has in present tense, have is for I/you/they/we while has for he/she/it. After Have to or has to following by verb 1 (infinitive)

  • Toni's unclehas torepair his car before going trip
  • Nana and her sister have to finish their assignment
  • Sonya hasn't to send the message to me later on
  • Children Haven't to study in the house with their family

council
department

family
firm
group
jury
majority
minority
navy
public
school
senate
society
team
troupe

In sentences, collective nouns can be either singular or plural, depending on context. In writing, this double status often causes agreement errors. How do you tell if a collective noun is singular or plural? What verbs and pronouns do you use with the collective noun?Let's check the examples below :

Collective nouns as plural in sentences

  • After the three-hour practice under the brutal sun, the team shower, change into their street clothes, and head to their air-conditioned homes.
  • After the long exam, the class start their research papers on famous mathematicians.
  • The jury disagree about the guilt of the accused and have told the judge that they are hopelessly deadlocked.

Collective nouns as singular in sentences

  • My team wins the match
  • The herd is following the sheperd
  • That company hires for a supervisor
concept of nouns, material and collective nouns

NOTE:

Whenever you cannot decide if a collective noun is singular or plural, exercise your options as a writer. You have two ways that you can compose the sentence without causing an agreement error:

  • insert the word members after the collective noun (jury members, committee members, board members)
  • or use an entirely different word (players instead of team, students instead of class, soldiers instead of army)

Then you can use plural verbs and pronouns without worrying about making mistakes or sounding unnatural.

Understanding Concept of Nouns

learn English Online, Hello English, learn about noun

What are Nouns? We know that a sentence should have noun. Not every word is noun, but every noun is word, isn't it? haha.A noun is a word for a person, place, or thing. (You might like to think of nouns as naming words.) Everything we can see or talk about is represented by a word which names it. That "naming word" is called a noun.

Sometimes a noun will be the name for something we can touch (e.g., tiger, bread, computer), and sometimes a noun will be the name for something we cannot touch (e.g., happiness, trust, love).

Everything is represented by a word that lets us talk about it. This includes people (e.g., woman, teacher), animals (e.g., fish, bird), places (e.g.,hospital, shop), objects (e.g., vase, pencil), substances (e.g., wood, metal), qualities (e.g., heroism, sorrow), actions (e.g., swimming, dancing), and measures (e.g., inch, ounce).

Here are some more examples:

  • soldier - Alan - cousin - Frenchman (< names for people)
  • cat - hippopotamus - owl - cub (< names for animals)

  • happiness - beauty - bravery - health - faith (< names for qualities)
  • playing - cooking - barking - reading - listening (< names for actions)
  • year - inch - day - pound - kilogram (< names for measures)
  • house - Jakarta - factory - garage (< names for places)
  • chair - eyeglasses - blanket - freezer(< names for objects)
  • metal - oxygen - water - ice (< names for substances)

Using of Pluralisation Nouns

learn pluralisation

In concept of countable and uncountable nouns, we know if the things are more than 1 or in big quantities, we should use some special rules, for example in countable nouns we use suffix -s/-es. However, we also can use adjective many/much, few/little and some/any to express the plural form of it. What are differences between them?Let's check it out.

#1. Much Or Many?

In Indonesia, much or many means "banyak". It shows the big quantities of something, which :

NOTE :

Because of Uncountable noun, we don't need to add final -s/-es after noun in plural forms

  • MUCH is used for expressing plural form "banyak" for uncountable noun.
  • Example :
    • Her uncle had given us much money since two days ago.
    • That drunkard drank much alcohol and ate much noodle last night.
    • We don't need much flour and much oil to fry it.
  • MANY is used for expressing plural form "banyak" for countable noun.

NOTE :

Not all of countable noun add by final -s/-es for plural form. Remember there are some noun are irregular form >>see this article

Example :
  • Gigih reads many magazines and collects many toys.
  • Do you see many children in my house?
  • We don't need buy many glasses and plates.

#2. Little or Few?

In Indonesia, Little or Few means "sedikit". It means that the numbers or quantities are lower than much/many but still more than a/an.

  • LITTLE, is "sedikit" that used for Uncountable Nouns. Using of Little can be used stand alone or adding by article a ..... of .....
  • Example

    1. My brother tasted a little of honey from my uncle.
    2. Sania doesn't pour little powder onto the cake.
    3. He looks little nervous before his performance.
  • FEW, is "sedikit" that used for Countable nouns. Same with little, Few also used stand alone or adding by article a .... of .....
  • Example :

    1. Your monkey eats few bananas every days.
    2. I catch few butterflies in the garden and I'll release them soon.

#3.Some or Any?

NOTE :

Remember, SOME / ANY can be used by both uncountable and countable nouns. The only things that differentiate it only form of the sentences, which SOME for Positive and offering, while ANY for Negative and Interrogative

Some or Any in Indonesian means "beberapa" (several). It's not different between countable and uncountable nouns for using some or any, excepts some countable nouns are using -s/-es after the nouns (to show their pluralisation).

  • SOME is used for POSITIVE Sentence and OFFERING sentence (in questions). Let's read these example:
    1. Fitrah drinks some water in the kitchen.
    2. Would you like some meatballs or juice?
    3. I like some potatoes when I'm hungry.
    4. Do you like some salt in your soup?
  • ANY, is used for NEGATIVE sentence and INTERROGATIVE sentence (in questions).
    1. Do you have any erasers?
    2. I don't have any problems
    3. Could you show me any examples?
    4. She will not find any meat in the market today.

Countable and Uncountable Noun

countable and uncountable noun

In English Grammar, we know about noun or in Indonesia called “kata benda”. There are many kinds of nouns that depend on the characteristics, origin, regularity and quantities.

From the characteristics we know there are 5 kind of nouns, they are : proper nouns, common nouns, abstract nouns, concrete nouns and collective nouns. From the origin, we know that nouns can be made from adjective or verb by adding suffixes or prefixes. From regularity, we know that nouns there are two, regular and irregular noun. From quantities, we know there are two kinds, they are countable and uncountable nouns

In this post, we will discuss about the last, countable and uncountable nouns.

1. COUNTABLE NOUN

In simple way, we can say countable nouns are nouns which the quantities or numbers can be counted. The characteristics of countable nouns are can be counted because the size of them are big, can be seen by us, concrete,

This following are some example of countable nouns

regular irregular
singular plural singular plural
book books child children
pen pens mouse mice
knife knives man men
box boxes woman women
butterfly butterflies tooth teeth
wolf wolves sheep

How do we count them?

  • Singular form
  • In singular form, we can use article A or An to express them. (read the article A, An, The for the clear explanation). In singular form, we only use A or An without adding suffix –s/-es after it.

    Example

    1. Nina has a red flower in her livingroom.
    2. We took anorange from your garden.
    3. Miyashi will buy aunique computer.
    4. I am walking on the rain by using anumbrella
  • Plural form
  • For Plural form, we can use suffix –s/-es to express it while we can also add adverb of quantities such as many/few/some/any before it. Pay attention to add –es/-es because there are some rules of it. You can read it from this article (Rules of adding suffix –s/-es for plural nouns).

But mention, not all of nouns can be added by –es/-es, because there are some irregular nouns. Let pay attention with the table below :

    IRREGULAR NOUN
    singular plural
    man seorang laki-laki
    men (banyak) laki-laki
    woman seorang wanita
    women (banyak) wanita
    tooth sebuah gigi
    teeth (banyak) gigi
    foot sebuah kaki
    feet (banyak) kaki
    mouse seekor tikus
    mice (banyak) tikus
    louse seekor kutu
    lice (banyak) kutu
    child seorang anak
    children (banyak) anak
    ox seekor sapi jantan
    oxen (banyak) sapi jantan
    sheep seekor domba
    sheep (banyak) domba
    fish seekor ikan
    fish (banyak)

    Examples :

    • Mr. Sony writes three letters for two hours
    • Marina and bring many magazines and some pens
    • My brother caught five butterflies and a coconut bug yesterday.
    • Your mother doesn’t buy ten tomatoes, six carrots and two eggs.

2.UNCOUNTABLE NOUN

The uncountable nouns are nouns which can’t be counted in numbers (because of their characteristic/type/size).For example : water, oil, salt, sugar and etc.

How do we count them?

  • Singular form
  • For singular,we use COUNTABLE NOUN for measuring them such as: cup, box, bottle, bowl, plate, kilo and etc. Those measurement is not only for UNCOUNTABLE Noun, but also COUNTABLE NOUN. This following table will explain about singular COUNTABLE NOUN.

    expression meaning
    example
    a bowl of ....
    semangkuk ...
I buy a bowl of noodle
    a plate of ...
    sepiring ...
I eat a plate of fried rice
    a cup of ...
    secangkir ..
My father drank a cup of coffee last night
    a glass of...
    segelas ....
Goku takes a glass of milk in refrigerator
    a box of ...
    sekotak ...
Do you put a box of sugar here?
  • Plural Form
  • To count them in big quantities, we can use numbers from their measurement for example : a glass become two glasses of milk , a plate become some plates of fried rice. But, we also can use : Much, little, some or any to express it too.

    #1.Much means "banyak"

    #2.Little means "sedikit"

    #3.Some/any means "beberapa",for the differences see : some/any

    Example :

    • Fitri tropica drinks much water.
    • We add little sugar and salt into our food.
    • Do you like any sugar?
    • They are eating two bowls of chicken noodle.

Okay, I think enough for my explanation about Countable/Uncountable nouns, if you still confused or don't understand, please leave comment and I will reply it soon. Thanks and happy English.

Simple Present Tense Exercise 1

Test your Present Tense Knowledge

1. 1.Spongebob ... Krabby Patty in the kitchen everyday?

2.Reno and Shinta .... not go to the hospital today

3.Does your brother ... the kites this afternoon?

4.Our children ... the movie with their babysitter this morning

5. She .... a baker, she doesn't make bread

Understanding Simple Present Tense (verbal)

learn simple present tense

Simple Present tense is the basic tenses when we learn about English, especially if you are foreign or second language learner. Although it is basic of English, many students have difficulties when they meet this sentence in the text, or write their form because of they don't know or understanding about it. So let us get acquintanced with this tenses pattern.

In this article, we will discuss and understanding of Simple Present tense as verbal sentence. We should know first about verbal sentence. Verbal sentence is the sentence has the verb (read more about verbal sentence). Let us see the examples below:

  • We are the students (NONVERBAL)
  • She is my mother(NONVERBAL)
  • Budi eats fried banana(VERBAL)
  • They play in the backyard(VERBAL)

From the examples above, we can see the third and fourth are verbal sentences.

If we talk about present tense, Present tense is the sentence that tell us about what happen in the present, it can be facts, daily activities/routines,hobbies/habits, spoken language or statement.

Pattern Example meaning
S+V1(s/es)+O+ADV(optional)
  1. My father reads newspaper today
  2. We come to your school this afternoon
  1. Ayah saya membaca koran hari ini
  2. Kami datang ke sekolah mu siang ini
S+DO/DOES+NOT+V1+O+ADV(optional)
  1. My math teacher doesn't teach us everyday
  2. Elephants don't break those houses
  1. Guru MTK saya tidak mengajar kami setiap hari
  2. Gajah gajah tidak merusak rumah-rumah itu
DO/DOES+S+V1+O+ADV(optional)
  1. Do you like orange juice?
  2. Does he watch the movie today?
  1. Apakah kamu suka jus jeruk?
  2. Apakah dia menonton movie hari ini?

How do we know the present tense sentence? We can know if it is present tense or not by seeing this characteristics :

  • VERB : Present tense Verbal always use Verb1 and for subject HE/SHE/IT Verb 1 adding s/es
  • Adverb of time : For adverb of time, the sentence use Present time such as , This ...., for example this morning, this sunday; Today; Everyday;and tonight
  • For negative and interogative, we use DO/DOES for Verbal sentence, which Do for Subject I/You/They/We and DOes for He/She/It. When they use DO/DOES, the verb become V1 without -s/-es anymore

How about the the rule to add s/es for Verb1 for HE/SHE/IT subject?

  • For Verb that has final consonant such as -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o, -z, -s, will add with -es, example : GOes, WATCHes, FIXes, KISSes, WASHes etc
  • For Verb that final consonant -y, that is preceded by a consonant letter (a,i,u,e,o), -Y will remove and change with -i and add by -es, example : CRies(from CRY), FLies (fly), TRIES(try),STUDies(Study) etc
